Association of the Perpetual Lamp

in honour of

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Established on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16th 1935, with the permission of His Grace Archbishop Prendiville, at the Carmelite Monastery in Nedlands, Perth, Western Australia.

Enrolment in the Perpetual Lamp affiliates benefactors of the Carmelite Nuns with:

the prayers and sacrifices of the Nuns.

Special Masses and prayers are offered for members.

A Lamp burns continually beside the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel as a visible sign of this union of prayer.

Brief History

From the founding of the first monastery by St. Teresa of Avila in the 16th Century, Carmelite Nuns have relied upon alms to supplement the income they are able to earn through work within the monastery. Gifts of money, goods and services assist in meeting regular needs and help in the building or maintenance of a monastery. The establishment of the Perpetual Lamp Association in 1935, the year our monastery was founded, helped to build our Monastery. Contributions of members continue to provide means to assist in the upkeep and repair of the Monastery.

St. Teresa emphasised that her nuns were to respond with gratitude and prayer for the gifts they received from benefactors. Each day, after the evening meal, the names of those who have assisted the Nuns during the day are read out to the gathered community and prayers are said for them.

The names of benefactors are also entered into the Book of Remembrance of the Perpetual Lamp. The lamp which burns continually beside the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a visible sign of their union with the prayers and sacrifices of the Carmelite Nuns. Regular Masses are also offered for all the members, living or deceased.
